nutrition

This one can be a little confusing for beginning cyclists. There is a plethora of information and opinion out there, from what foods and plans work best to which products to avoid. Thing is tho, we are all different and finding out what works best for you is a process you must undertake.

Cycling nutrition is a combination of daily nutrition and training/riding nutrition. We are not going to get into daily nutrition here as we hope that you are eating a proper balanced diet that will effectively and efficiently fuel your adventures. You’ve got any number of professional sources for general nutrition out there. Our input will be limited to the methods many of us use, and pointing you to the supplemental products we carry and recommend

Make no mistake: There are two distinct camps on the cycling nutrition front. Those who eat only real food, and those who embrace the technology of engineered supplemental nutrition.

Those who use and enjoy energy bars and gels have a wide variety from which to choose. Like electrolyte drink mixes, try these out on a non-ride day before adding them to your jersey pocket for that big 100-mile day you’ve got planned.

real food

Those of us who subscribe to the real food only mindset spend a lot more time in the kitchen, but we know that our body will recoil at the idea of a punch of sugary gel. Riders in this group will often carry small baked potatoes, straws of honey, fig bars, or any number of homemade energy boosters. Dr. Allen Lim wrote the book(s) on this and also makes a line of natural food-based products called Skratch Labs.  Additionally, we carry several other brands of natural food-based options.
