By Evan Lee

What Ridge Cyclery is stoked to announce we are one of the few retail shops that is participating in the City of Denver E-bike rebate program. Read more below to learn about the ins and outs of the program along with which bikes qualify for the rebate.

TAKE ADVANTAGE OF YOUR DENVER E-BIKE REBATE!

With 49 years of bicycle retail history, Wheat Ridge Cyclery has seen trends come and go. If it has happened with bikes, we’ve got experience. Back in the 1970s we even carried mopeds! Now it’s e-bikes, which have gone from a niche trend to one of the largest segments of bicycle retail in just a few years. E-bikes have become a fantastic way to get around town with their ease of use and excellent range.

And now the City of Denver has made e-bikes even more attractive. With its wide ranging climate action rebate programs, Denver’s Office of Climate Action, Sustainability and Resiliency launched an e-bike rebate program in April 2022. The program is budgeted for $3,000,000 this year and will continue in 2023 and 2024, figures to be determined.

The program proved so popular that it had to be suspended just three weeks after introduction as more than 3,000 vouchers went out. The program has now been restructured and is up and running again. The most recent release date was September 6, with three more coming before the end of the year:

  • October 3
  • November 7
  • December 5

The vouchers are available to any Denver resident 16 years or older lucky enough to get one. The value of the standard instant rebate voucher is $400. Income-qualified residents receive a $1,200 rebate, and an additional $500 is available for qualifying residents buying e-cargo bikes.

Come to that, there are many different types of e-bikes and not all of them qualify for the rebates. The big rule is that the battery must be 750 watts or less. Here’s the breakdown of e-bikes that qualify:

  • Class I: e-bikes with pedal assist motors that have a top speed of 20 mph
  • Class II: e-bikes with throttle assist motors with a top speed of 20 mph.
  • Class III: e-bikes with a top speed of 28 mph, with pedal assist and/or throttle assist.

Lastly, no gasoline powered motors and no full-suspension mountain e-bikes qualify for the rebate.

Other rules apply as well, and it is in your best interest to familiarize yourself with them through the www.denver.gov link provided below.

Short version is:

  • Applicants must be 16 years of age or older and must provide proof of a physical Denver address.
  • To meet the larger income-qualified rebate applicants must have a household income below 60% of Colorado’s median income, which is anything below $62,600 for one-person households and $71,550 for two-person.
  • Or provide proof of enrollment in one of the government assistance programs listed in the link below:
